We appreciate how an eye exam for a three year old differs to the eye exam of a 50 year old and since our patient age ranges from little children all the way to those aged over 100 our practice is equipped for all.

Young ones can profit from our special interactive eye examination, which use colourful pictures to keep the attention of the child for much longer as well as performing an eye test on those who cannot yet read.

EQUIPMENT THAT MAY BE USED DURING YOUR EYE TEST

3D OCT (RETINAL SCANNER), MYAH BIOMETER, AUTOREFRACTOR, SLITLAMP MICROSCOPE & FIELD TEST ANALYSER ETC

You can have a variety of special tests which are available at Gavzey Opticians such as; retinal scans, eye pressure test, slitlamp microscope, Myah biometry, field test, pachymetry, keratometry etc 3D OCT a very accurate diagnostic tool allowing us a greatly magnified view of layers at the back of your eye, making it easier to detect any problems at an early stage. We save all these images and are able to compare with previous scans in order to monitor any changes or forward to a relevant specialist.

As well as detecting the presence of a wide range of eye conditions such as cataract, Macular degeneration and glaucoma can be detected up to 2 years ahead of symptoms. Your examinations are also designed to check on general conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and many more health conditions.

NEW! 3D OCT

Major medical conditions can be found by simply examining your eyes. Gavzey Opticians have invested in a revolutionary piece of diagnostic equipment that can detect a number of common eye conditions, such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy, during a routine eye test.

This piece of equipment is called a 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (3D OCT).

What is OCT? Ocular Coherence Tomography is an advanced eye scan for people of all ages. Similar to ultrasound, OCT uses light rather than sound waves to reveal the many layers that make up the back of the eye.

This particular 3D OCT unit captures a digital scan of the inner surface of the eye. Areas of concern identified by the scan, can be cross referenced with the classic view of the back of the eye that we see on a retinal photograph.

In other words, if you are looking at an iced cake before it has been sliced, you don’t know if it contains jam, cream or chocolate layers; equally if it’s lumpy or smooth. With this unique NON-INVASIVE technology we are able to see both the surface of the back of your eye (the top of the cake) and a three dimensional image of the layers that are beneath the surface.

Eyedeal Care Plan

After telling you how important your eyes are and how well we can look after them, we would also like to mention how affordable we have made it.

We offer a range of EyeDeal care plans for a small fee, tailored to your needs. Please pick up a leaflet or speak to a member of staff about how we can help you.

Private & NHS

You can book a private eye examination, approximately 40 mins, which includes all the advanced tests available to you.

You can have a free eye examination completely paid for by the NHS, if you are eligible. Eligible categories include children, those over age 60, diabetics or those in receipt of certain benefits.
We usually allow 20 minutes for an NHS eye examination and we use standard NHS equipment .

The NHS eye examination does not include all the advanced examinations which are routinely carried out in our practice, such as 3D OCT. Therefore we recommend an upgrade to a private eye. examination.

COMMON EYE CONDITIONS

Cataracts along with wrinkles are very often an unfortunate side effect of us getting older and wiser. Cataract is the yellowing of the tiny lens in our eye. Everyone over the age of 60 years has some degree of yellowing but some people are more affected than others. There are some preventative measures, such as eating healthily, not smoking, protecting our eyes from harsh sunlight and even take dietary supplements.

We can advise you on all that as well as help you with cataracts that have developed. Sometimes change in spectacle prescription will improve the eyesight but on those occasions where this is not enough, Gavzey Opticians’ optometrists work closely with ophthalmic surgeons and will refer you to their care if necessary.

Macular degeneration is very common in our ageing population.

Your macula is designed to detect colours and fine details of your surroundings. In order to do this well, it needs yellow pigments as a shield against harmful blue light and a firm retina underlying it. Over time or with poor diet the yellow pigment decreases and also the retina gets damaged by free radicles. Its worthwhile guarding against these outcomes by regular 3D OCT scans and an improved diet or supplements. Why don’t you ask our knowledgeable staff?

Glaucoma is another ailment that plagues many of us as we get older. It is thought that over 1% of the population aged over 40 are affected by it and the risk is higher if there is a family history.

Unfortunately Glaucoma’s early stages are difficult to notice as there might not be any symptoms, therefore it is crucial to have regular check-ups as there are various tests we perform to establish the health of your eyes. The good news is that with 3D OCT scans glaucoma can be diagnosed a lot earlier. There are now many modern treatments available to arrest or slow the progress and thus saving your eye sight
